Simple Steps for Everyday Foot Care

Many people connect that the quality of their life is based on how good their feet feel. They are the foundation of the body, and completing daily activities may be difficult with aching feet. Additionally, poor foot health may limit exercise completely, or limit the amount of time spent practicing it. There are simple habits that can ensure healthy feet when everyday foot care techniques are enforced. These start with washing and drying the feet thoroughly, followed by applying a good moisturizer on them. It is beneficial to have the toenails properly trimmed, and this can be done by having regular pedicures done, or by cutting them at home using a stainless steel clipper. The feet will feel good when they are soaked in warm water at the end of the day, which may have a soothing effect on the overall body. Additionally, the type of shoes that are worn contributes significantly to how the feet feel. It is beneficial to wear shoes that are the correct size, have ample room for the toes to move freely in, and are comfortable. If you would like to have additional tips on following a daily foot care routine, please confer with a podiatrist.

Everyday foot care is very important to prevent infection and other foot ailments. If you need your feet checked, contact Matthew McQuaid, DPM from Lake Mendocino Podiatry. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Everyday Foot Care

Often, people take care of their bodies, face and hair more so than they do for their feet. But the feet are a very important aspect of our bodies, and one that we should pay more attention to. Without our feet, we would not be able to perform most daily tasks.

It is best to check your feet regularly to make sure there are no new bruises or cuts that you may not have noticed before. For dry feet, moisturizer can easily be a remedy and can be applied as often as necessary to the affected areas. Wearing shoes that fit well can also help you maintain good foot health, as well as making it easier to walk and do daily activities without the stress or pain of ill-fitting shoes, high heels, or even flip flops. Wearing clean socks with closed shoes is important to ensure that sweat and bacteria do not accumulate within the shoe. Clean socks help to prevent Athlete’s foot, fungi problems, bad odors, and can absorb sweat.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact our offices located in Lakeport and Ukiah, CA . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot and ankle needs.

Club Foot Is Treatable

Club foot is a condition that begins when the baby is inside the womb. It is considered to be a rare foot condition and is noticeable as the feet turn in and point down. It happens as a result of a short Achilles tendon and can affect one or both feet. Club foot is generally not painful to babies despite the difficulty in walking if it is not treated. An ultrasound can be performed during the pregnancy, and it can give the parents the opportunity to speak with their doctor about specific treatment methods. A common treatment is referred to as the Ponseti method, and this provides gentle manipulation that stretches the feet into a better position. This is followed by having the baby wear a cast, and the method is repeated approximately every eight weeks. Minor surgery may be necessary to perform on the Achilles tendon when the feet have straightened out, and this can be helpful in loosening this tendon. If you have questions about club foot, it is strongly advised that you seek the counsel of a podiatrist who can perform the necessary treatment options that can benefit your child.

Some foot conditions may require additional professional care. If you have any concerns, contact Matthew McQuaid, DPM of Lake Mendocino Podiatry. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Rare Foot Conditions

The majority of foot conditions are common and can be treated by a podiatrist.  Standard diagnostic procedures are generally used to identify specific conditions and treatment can be rendered. A podiatrist also treats rare foot conditions which can be difficult to diagnose and may need extra attention and care.

There are many rare foot conditions that can affect children. Some of these can include:

  • Freiberg’s disease
  • Kohler’s disease
  • Maffucci syndrome

Freiberg’s disease - This can be seen as a deterioration and flattening of a metatarsal bone that exists in the ball of the foot. It typically affects pre-teen and teenage girls, but can affect anyone at any age. Symptoms that can accompany this can be swelling, stiffness, and the patient may limp.

Kohler’s disease - This often targets the bone in the arch of the foot and affects younger boys. It can lead to an interruption of the blood supply which ultimately can lead to bone deterioration. The patient may limp or experience tenderness, swelling, and redness.

Maffucci syndrome - This affects the long bones in a child’s foot leading to the development of abnormal bone lesions. They are benign growths and typically develop in early childhood and the bones may be susceptible to breaking.

A podiatrist can properly diagnose and treat all types of rare foot conditions. If your child is affected by any of these symptoms or conditions, please don’t hesitate to call our office so the correct treatment method can begin.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact our offices located in Lakeport and Ukiah, CA . We offer the newest diagnostic tools and technology to treat your foot and ankle needs.

Fissures Are Severely Cracked Heels

Mild cases of cracked heels generally are not concerning, and a good moisturizer may be used to help control this condition. Severe cracks in the skin are referred to as fissures and can bleed and cause pain. They can develop as a result of standing on hard surfaces for most of the day, or from wearing shoes that have an open back. There may be existing medical conditions that can lead to getting cracked heels. These can consist of different types of dermatosis, psoriasis, and thyroid disorders. Additionally, people who are obese may experience cracked heels, which may come from the extra weight the heels endure while standing and walking. The most effective way of treating cracked heels is by preventing them from happening. This can be done by drinking plenty of water daily, and frequently applying a good moisturizer on them. Some people enjoy using a pumice stone on their heels to remove dead skin that may have developed. If you have cracked heels, it is urged that you consult with a podiatrist who can guide you toward the correct treatment methods, which may include prescribing medication.

If the skin on your feet starts to crack, you may want to see a podiatrist to find treatment. If you have any concerns, contact Matthew McQuaid, DPM from Lake Mendocino Podiatry. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Cracked Heels

It is important to moisturize your cracked heels in order to prevent pain, bleeding, and infection. The reason cracked heels form is because the skin on the foot is too dry to support the immense pressure placed on them. When the foot expands, the dry skin on the foot begins to split.

Ways to Help Heal Them

  • Invest in a good foot cream
  • Try Using Petroleum Jelly
  • Ease up on Soaps
  • Drink Plenty of Water

Ways to Prevent Cracked Heels

  • Moisturize After Showering
  • Skip a Shower
  • Keep Shower Water Lukewarm
  • Don’t Scrub Your Feet

If you are unsure how to proceed in treating cracked heels, seek guidance from a podiatrist. Your doctor will help you with any questions or information you may need.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our offices located in Lakeport and Ukiah, CA . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot care needs.

Blisters on the Bottom of the Feet

Blisters that form on the bottom of the feet can take the joy out of running, exercising, and participating in sporting activities. Blisters are common among athletes. So many seek to know their cause and how to care for them. A blister typically forms due to excessive friction from wearing shoes and socks that do not fit correctly. A bubble filled with liquid will form and remain that way until the raw skin underneath it has healed. Blisters on the bottom of the foot may heal faster when a gauze bandage is applied. The bandage can also provide the protection needed to avoid premature popping. Elevating the foot at the end of the day may be beneficial, as well as removing the bandage to allow air to reach the blister. Soaking the feet in warm water may help keep the blister clean, which can help to prevent an infection from developing. Blisters on the bottom of the feet can be bothersome, so if you are afflicted with one or more, please consult a podiatrist who can guide you toward the correct treatment.

Blisters may appear as a single bubble or in a cluster. They can cause a lot of pain and may be filled with pus, blood, or watery serum. If your feet are hurting, contact Matthew McQuaid, DPM of Lake Mendocino Podiatry. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Foot Blisters

Foot blisters are often the result of friction. This happens due to the constant rubbing from shoes, which can lead to pain.

What Are Foot Blisters?

A foot blister is a small fluid-filled pocket that forms on the upper-most layer of the skin. Blisters are filled with clear fluid and can lead to blood drainage or pus if the area becomes infected.

Symptoms

(Blister symptoms may vary depending on what is causing them)

  • Bubble of skin filled with fluid
  • Redness
  • Moderate to severe pain
  • Itching

Prevention & Treatment

In order to prevent blisters, you should be sure to wear comfortable shoes with socks that cushion your feet and absorb sweat. Breaking a blister open may increase your chances of developing an infection. However, if your blister breaks, you should wash the area with soap and water immediately and then apply a bandage to the affected area. If your blisters cause severe pain it is important that you call your podiatrist right away.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our offices located in Lakeport and Ukiah, CA . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot care needs.

Why Does Morton’s Neuroma Develop?

Nerve tissue between the third and fourth toes that becomes thick, or compressed, may indicate a condition known as Morton’s neuroma. It happens when there is not enough room for the toes to move freely in from wearing certain types of shoes. High heels fall into this category, and may cause the nerve to become irritated and inflamed. It is considered to be a painful foot condition, and relief may be found when different shoes are worn. This may be a successful treatment method if it is noticed early, and completing daily activities with ease may resume. In severe cases, where walking becomes difficult, surgery may be a necessary option for permanent relief by removing the affected nerve. The symptoms that many people can experience with this condition include the sensation of standing on a pebble or marble, and pain may radiate from the ball of the foot. Morton’s neuroma is a serious foot condition, and if you have any of the above symptoms, it is strongly advised that you are under the care of a podiatrist who can help you to find permanent relief.

Morton’s neuroma is a very uncomfortable condition to live with. If you think you have Morton’s neuroma, contact Matthew McQuaid, DPM of Lake Mendocino Podiatry. Our doctor will attend to all of your foot care needs and answer any of your related questions.
